Our Story
The Problem
At a product rate of 25 million tons a year, cotton is one of the top four crops in the world sadly nearly 90 percent of that global production is GMO grown. Ask yourself how many of your clothing is made from cotton? It’s safe to say that virtually everyone owns something made from cotton. A huge majority of today’s clothing is made from or contains cotton, and to meet this high demand, an increase in conventional cotton is grown using genetic engineered seeds, and toxic chemicals in the production process. Over $2 billion worth of chemicals are sprayed on conventical cotton crops worldwide every year. Farmers who are exposed to these chemicals tend to gain illnesses each year, in fact 77 million cotton workers suffer acute pesticide poisoning, resulting in up to 20,000 deaths. Due to chemical exposure, the average life expectancy of a non-organic cotton farmer in India is mid-30’s.
Organic Cotton & Why We Use it
Organic cotton is cotton that is produced and certified to organic agricultural standards. Its production sustains the health of soils, ecosystems, and people by using natural processes rather than artificial inputs. Importantly organic cotton farming does not allow the use of toxic chemicals or GMOs. Instead, it combines tradition, innovation, and science to benefit the shared environment and promote a good quality of life for all involved. No toxic chemicals are used in the growing of organic cotton. It doesn’t damage the soil, has less impact on the air, and uses 71% less water and 62% less energy. Conventional cotton uses about 16% of the world’s insecticides and 7% of pesticides. Growing organic cotton keeps farmers and their families safe. They are not exposed to toxic chemicals in the field or through their food and water supply. This allows farmers to grow more than one crop which supplements their food and income.
